I wrote a long article about my look back to 2023 but in the end it didn’t feel right to me. So I’m just going to go really quickly through my year and the things I like and have done.

Healthy eating

Firstly, I started eating vegetables, which is a big win for me. My results are getting better, my weight is going down. And I hadn’t eaten vegetables all my life. At least not how I had.

The web as it should be

After reading Robb’s latest blog post The Web is Fantastic I agree and think I finally found the web the way it should be. I wasn’t really using RSS feeds until I got my first iOS device, maybe just experimenting with it. Now I have RSS feeds from people I am interested in, with no ads. Or by hosting articles that I’m not even interested in, but the social network’s algorithm thinks I am.

In the case of programming, thanks to these wonderful people, I managed to build my own site from scratch. Without buying a css template which looks cool but in the end I dont even use it.

I learned how to use variables in CSS and how to create colour schemes or switch between dark and light. My theme is based on Hello friend NG by Djordje Atlialp, which is now mostly rewritten. The navigation is inspired by Robb’s website (sorry Robb’s for stealing that idea).

I started to look at Javascript solutions from these people and now it is easy to generate Hugo posts from API what was hard a year ago.

I also tried to participate in AdventOfCode, which was quite difficult for me as a non-professional programmer. But when I saw the solutions of some of the participants, it made me think that some of the things I did were unnecessarily overcomplicated. And now I know using classes everywhere is not necessary.

I also implemented a status page with a post graph, inspired by Robb’s Eleventy Post Graph Plugin, but I had to experiment a bit because my site runs on Hugo. If you like, you can take a look at my implementation here. Or if you have your own that I would like to see, feel free to contact me.

So what in the end?

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for your time and attention. May the coming year be filled with joy, success and new opportunities. I wish you a Happy New Year filled with love, laughter and all the wonderful things life has to offer. Cheers to new beginnings and exciting adventures ahead! Thank you for being part of this journey and here’s to a fantastic year ahead!

🥂 Happy new year 2024!
